Jobs in English and Transdisciplinary Studies

Each summer, some Disseminar members come together to run a free Zoom workshop series for academic job seekers in our field.

Jobs in English and Transdisciplinary Studies, or JETS, consists of five meetings focusing on different aspects of the English academic job market, from deciding which jobs to apply for to preparing for interviews. New in 2025, we are adding to this existing work with a group peer review and an annotated bibliography of studies on the academic job market.

We know that there are sometimes gaps or oversights in job market preparation for English PhDs; we also know that this already-competitive market is continuing to change year by year. For those reasons, we aim to:

  • Offer advice using long-term experience mentoring job-seekers but centering recent experiences of job-seekers, and
  • Build a network of support across institutions and subdisciplines.

JETS 2026 starts on June 10th, 2026! Our five-session series is as follows:

  • Wednesday, June 10: Overview of the academic job market
  • Wednesday, June 24: Finding, understanding, and annotating academic job ads
  • Wednesday, July 8: Preparing all statements (teaching philosophy, research statements, DEI statements, etc.)
  • Wednesday, July 22: Preparing cover letters
  • Wednesday, August 12: Preparing for interviews

All sessions are held at 1pm EDT/10am PDT/7pm CET/10pm Central Asia.

As of Spring 2026, JETS has secured a Research Initiative Grant from the Conference on College Composition and Communication to formally study the English academic job market—and figure out how to better support those job-seekers. We will provide modest compensation to recent job-seekers who are willing to share their stories with us.
